Come join us for TEC (Technology Enhanced Classroom) Expo July 12th and July 13th 1:00-2:30 p.m. in the Scarfe building foyer! The events on these two days are free and open to all UBC students, staff and faculty members.
July 12th will feature Steps to a Virtual Stage, Stem Education Videos, Enhancing High Performance Coaching, Camtasia, Creating Multi-touch Books, Learner Competencies and Digital Badges and more.
July 13th is the Educational Maker Day. It is a hands-on time for you to engage in both digital and non-digital creative making. Some activities this year include Anne Lama and Hannah Mckendry with Book Making and Elena Pederson, Seed Library, Virtual Reality (including an opportunity to try the HTC Vive from the brand new Emerging Media Lab!), Coding with Microbits, Button Making, Sensory Food Exploration, Knot Tying, Weaving, Jewellery Making and Robotics.

Celebrate BC 2017 Event Jan 17: Celebration of B.C.’s Award Winning Children’s Authors and Illustrators
Don’t forget, January 17 is our annual Celebration of B.C.’s Award Winning Children’s Authors and Illustrators with special guests Lee Edward Fodi and Janet Whyte, and the Children’s Literature Roundtables of Canada 2016 Information Book Award winners Deborah Hodge (author) and Karen Reczuch (illustrator) for their book West Coast Wild: A Nature Alphabet. Over 20 B.C. authors and illustrators will be there as well!
We will also be selling mystery cracker jack packs for $20 each to help fund the speakers at our next events. Each package of cracker jacks contains the secret number of a prize valued between $25 and $200. You could be the lucky winner of a set of books, a bottle of wine, a framed illustration, or another wonderful treat! Please remember to bring cash or cheques as we are unable to process credit or debit card payments at the venue.

UBC Expert: Some B.C. kids at risk of falling behind in digital literacy
With smartphones in their pockets and tablets in their backpacks, students growing up in the digital era are the most connected generation yet. But, as UBC’s Ron Darvin notes, simply having access to digital tools doesn’t mean all students are on a level playing field. Darvin, a PhD student in the faculty of education and a UBC Public Scholar, examines how students of different socio-economic backgrounds develop digital skills—and why some children are at risk of being left behind.
