Congratulations to children’s science writer Shar Levine on being awarded Order of Canada
Congratulations to Shar Levine (children’s science writer extraordinaire) who has been awarded the Order of Canada.
Shar Levine was given this award “for her contributions to making science easier for children to understand through her hands-on workshops and for her work to involve parents, teachers and librarians in science education.”
Here at UBC Shar has given generously of her time presenting to all our elementary teacher candidates as part of Authorfest, initiated and presented at Celebrate Science (supported by IKE Barber Center) and as part of iSchool courses.
This is wonderful news for children’s writers, for science writers and especially for women and science!
The Order of Canada, one of our country’s highest civilian honours, was established in 1967, during Canada’s centennial year, to recognise outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
Library closed on July 1st for Canada Day
Please note that all UBC library branches will be closed for Canada Day.

UBC Centennial Maker Faire
“If you’ve ever wondered what it might be like to make a keyboard out of bananas, learn how to 3D print a miniature version of your favourite sculpture, or find out how to make your old robot vacuum into an abstract expressionist painter, then you might be interested in attending the UBC Centennial Maker Faire.
The UBC Centennial Maker Faire is a showcase of innovative and creative projects from the various UBC maker communities around campus. Taking place on April 7th, 2016, the faire offers a venue for makers to showcase their projects, engage with others and provide insight into their creative processes. Learn what it took to bring their visions to life and the driving forces that make them tick.”
