TD Canadian Children’s Book Week is the single most important national event celebrating Canadian children’s books and the importance of reading. Close to 35,000 children, teens and adults participate in activities held in every province and territory across the country. Hundreds of schools, public libraries, bookstores and community centres host events as part of this major literary festival.

Chinese Canadian Stories Project — for Students and Teachers

May 4, 2013, 10.00AM-2.00PM at Richmond Public Library

 

The Richmond Delta Regional Heritage Fair showcases research projects on Canadian history, and those students participate in a full-day program of field trips, workshops, and other activities.   Community Engagement Librarian Allan Cho will be presenting materials from the Chinese Canadian Stories Project to teachers and students at the Richmond Public Library.  The Chinese Canadian Stories project aims to make widely accessible learning materials created by teachers for teachers, along with a range of digital resources that use the latest technology and that capture the energy, passion, and curiosity of students of all ages.  Classroom learning materials include short videos, whiteboard tools, teachers’ guides, and immersive online adventures that help students re-imagine the past.

Coquitlam School District cutting 142 jobs

CAD_MoneyThis article in the Vancouver Sun reports that 142 jobs are being cut to make up for a $12.1-million projected operating deficit in School District 43’s 2013/2014 school year.  This represents a 6% staff cut amounting to: “cutting 81 teachers, 19 teacher assistants/special education assistants/youth workers along with 32 clerical/custodial/IT and facilities positions and 10 from administration.”

Other changes also being proposed are enlarging class sizes and cutting back on various class activities.
