Vancouver school district’s continuing ed program may be discontinued
“The future is uncertain for the Vancouver school district’s continuing education program, which charges tuition for a range of special-interest courses for adults but has been losing money each year for the last five years.”
Coquitlam School District cutting 142 jobs
This article in the Vancouver Sun reports that 142 jobs are being cut to make up for a $12.1-million projected operating deficit in School District 43’s 2013/2014 school year. This represents a 6% staff cut amounting to: “cutting 81 teachers, 19 teacher assistants/special education assistants/youth workers along with 32 clerical/custodial/IT and facilities positions and 10 from administration.”
Other changes also being proposed are enlarging class sizes and cutting back on various class activities.

Over 110 underprivileged African students to study at UBC thanks to $25 million MasterCard donation
From the Vancouver Sun:
More than 110 underprivileged students from Africa will get to study at the University of B.C. thanks to a $25 million donation from MasterCard Foundation.
The students will receive comprehensive scholarships to live and learn at the university starting this fall as part of the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program, according to a news release Thursday from UBC.
Vancouver Technical secondary school teacher wins MusiCounts Teacher of the Year award

A Vancouver music teacher, Mark Reid, has won $10,000 cheque and a $10,000 for Vancouver Technical secondary school’s music program.
According to the Vancouver Sun article, “MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award recognizes the work of dedicated teachers who inspire students through their musical teachings.”
B.C. Needs More French Teachers
A report released by The Canadian Parents for French indicates that French language education in B.C. needs to improve in the following three areas:
- “program access”
- “providing for students with learning disabilities”
- “dealing with a shortage of qualified French teachers”
