Results of the UBC Education Library Puppet Naming Contest

It was an exciting past few weeks! UBC Education Library ran a very entertaining and popular puppet naming contest.  The contest was so popular, in fact, that it had to be extended!  Patrons were coming into the library just for the display, becoming very invested in the naming and curious about the winners.

Our 2020 “Blind Date with a Book” Collection Spotlight, where all the books were wrapped in plain paper and given simple clues on the outside was also a much-loved and enjoyed display.

The entries for the puppet naming contest were tabulated when the contest ended Monday, November 21 at noon. The names were judged on the afternoon of Wednesday, November 23.

Prizes ranged from various UBC Library “swag” including mugs and stationery.  The winning patrons have been contacted.

UBC Education Library Puppet Naming Contest

Did you know UBC Education Library has puppets you can borrow?  We do!  Our branch has 23 hand puppets, normally located in room 155, which can be signed out.

Currently, these puppets have simple names like bat, cat, tiger, and rabbit. We actually have several rabbits available to borrow and that can get confusing. And well, we think having puppets with names is just a bit more fun!  So we’re having a contest to find names that suit the unique look and “personality” of each of these great teaching tools.

Two puppets already have names: Sylvester the Cat. and Taz, the Tasmanian Devil. But the rest need your help!

The contest is open to all and there are prizes to be won! So drop by and enter in person. The puppets and entry ballots are on display near the front of the library.  They will also be in the Scarfe Building foyer for TEC Expo on Wed, Nov 16 12-1:30pm.

UPDATE: The contest has been extended to noon, Monday, November 21, 2022.

UPDATE 2: Winners will be contacted and announced on this blog at the end of November.

Graphic Novels on display!

Graphic novels have always been a popular item at UBC Education Library.  They make a great quick read when you need something fun injected into your day.

Often, especially for reluctant readers, graphic novels can add the extra support a child needs to help them complete a book.

Whether you’re looking for an easy yet captivating read for yourself, or you’re looking to introduce a young person to the love of reading, we invite you to drop by and borrow one of the many graphic novels we have on display near the front desk.

We have highlighted a few of our newest graphic novel acquisitions below:
